What Happened

Much has changed in a year. We now live in Brookline, Massachusetts. I do not know when we will be back on the island but we will be there again. Elias still visits the hospital on a weekly to biweekly basis for care and treatment and will continue on this path for another year.

  1. We are heading up to Maine on Friday 14th, passing through Boston mid-day. We would like to say, “hi” and offer some smiles and hugs. Love-

  2. I know how nights can get away from you when in the hospital. If you think of anything you need I can swing by in the morning before the boat. I will be in Boston around 10:30. I just want to reach through the computer and give you a HUG!!! You are a rock that is giving your family strenght, and you are glue that’s holding it all together for them. Keep strong and advocate for Elias.
I hope I get to see you tomorrow. But believe me, if it too much to have a visitor I understand!
    xoxo

  3. Coming over on Saturday, let me know what I can bring Elias for distractions…movies, crayons, trucks, cars also if you need me to pick up anything at your house, let me know. Can’t wait to hug you. You’re all doing great, it’s very difficult, but you’re all rock stars! See you in a few days.

  4. Hi Elias
We have heard so many wonderful things about you and hope it won’t be too long before we meet. When you get well we hope you will come up to Vermont and come visit us.
Please give kisses to your mom and daddy and know we are sending our love to you all.

  5. Hey Mai! Can you let us know if he has any special interests? Like sharks or space travel or legos or books? Is there anything he really doesn’t like or is afraid of? (Some kids love snakes and some kids are scared of them, for example)

I have plenty of distractions to send but I want to send the BEST one. Much love to you.

    • HI Claire,
Elias love animals, science, mazes, legos of any kind, he likes building things. He doesn’t like grizzlies he says they freak him out. But he loves sharks and fish etc. Ocean related things. He doesn’t care much for super heros and he likes bold colors like green and red. Thank you for thinking of him. 🙂 xo

  6. Mai and Co. I have a box coming to Elias. However, there’s a chance that I will be coming with Darya next weekend. I hope it works out. We are moving, as you know, and have A LOT to still do and its hanging over me. I am working on getting to see you and the family ASAP. I will let you know if I will be w/Darya next weekend. XOXOXO. Kisses … Love, Becky & Bren (Murphy, Brady and Jackson)>.

    • HI Becky,
I am not sure how much longer Elias will be able to have visitors. His blood counts are getting lower everyday. I hate to say if but After wednesday we will be on a day by day basis depending on his blood counts (we are already at a day to day basis anyway my attending doc tells me). He will have no immunity soon and we will have to keep him away from people eventually but it all depends on blood counts which are going down slowly. Please don’t make plans because we can not plan what his status will be. Also if you did come you would not be able to wear any clothing you had around your puppies, he is no allowed near any animals, job sites, dirt, plants. I would bring a pair of clothing to change into that had just been washed to change into before you came into our wing…just to be sure (not kidding). I have to wash everything everyday and disinfect his room every morning. Good luck with your move–be careful with your knees!-Mai

  7. Mai, I am not sure if you remember me or not but I met you this summer at the beach. Your two beautiful boys approached my son Fuller to play and they made sand castles together. I remember thinking how thoughtful and sweet your children were… not only with my son but with each other as well. My five month old son Sawyer was asleep under the umbrella and you kindly fixed the blanket so he was nice and covered. Although it was only for a few short minutes, I can remember visioning my two boys playing together as yours were on that sunny day in July; hoping that they would be the best of friends as Elias and Isaac are. We chatted for a bit and giggled at how much we LOVE boys; how much they loved their moms and how much they loved eachother as brothers! I am so sorry to hear about Elias and his cancer. I am actually a survivor of Childhood Lukemia. I was diagnosed at the age of 2; cured in one year and was in remission for 8 yrs. To be honest I don’t have too much recollection of my treatments in Boston or what life was like when I was sick, but I will say that your baby is in the best place he can be! I do remember how nice the doctors were at Childrens, I remember being ALWAYS hungry; no matter where I was or whose house I was at I always had the fridge open 🙂 I craved LOBSTER… the most expensive meal around. I remember the toy chest at the hospital, the big buildings in the city, the airplane rides over to the Cape, throwing up a lot from the medication, everyone around me not having any hair (mine for some reason stayed in), and getting my finger pricked a lot at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Again, it’s all very blurry… I dont want you to ever think that what is going on with Elias will traumatize him for life because it’s just one small part of it that you will get through and you’ll move on to bigger and better things! From what I’ve been reading, Elias is a strong boy who has a zest for life! My family and I will pray for Elias and your family every day and will await the day we hear he is Cancer Free! God Bless you, Johnna Holland
Please feel free to contact me if you ever want to chat.

  8. Dear Mai,

We are thinking of you guys and sending a little surprise for Elias your way. I know you have been through so much and please know you are in our thoughts. Big hugs from Indiana! Your friends, Grant and Amy Hale

  9. HI,

I saw the housing need posted on facebook, as we share a name and a home town I felt the need to say hello and wish you all well. I go back and forth to the Island every week from Boston if you ever need me to pick up anything and bring it back for you I can. I will post this on my school site and see to see if anyone hears about any housing for you.

  10. I lived on Nantucket for 22 years and my two boys were born and raised on Nantucket (they are now 24 and 27) and my oldest, Tyler, is back living full time on the island and works at Cisco Brewery, perhaps you know him or his girlfriend, Aly Lanagan, a teacher at the New School. I have never met you or your family but I have been reading your blog and wish to extend not only my prayers to you and your family but also our home in Duxbury should you or anybody in your family need a warm bed and a meal on your trips between the island and Boston. I know how many times we got stuck off island and had to stay in a hotel because the ferries were not running etc. I wish you all the best and do please take me up on my offer anytime. Linda Herrick
